Post-traumatic stress, or post traumatic stress disorder  or even PTSD as its known is a real mental health condition triggered by exposure to a terrifying event.

It’s in the news with many soldiers suffering from post traumatic stress but it’s something that happens to anyone.

It could be after a physical attack, a mugging or rape or even just an attempt where the person escaped, even a traffic accident can cause post traumatic stress.

You get through the trauma at the time but later on when everything seems to have calmed down then nightmares can happen about the event with flashbacks or the worst bits over and over.

Who gets post traumatic stress?

According to USA Dr Linda Petter ”Seven to eight percent of our population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives.”

Soldiers that come back from war are not the person that leaves, to fight in a war that’s in a place that’s hell on earth. Post traumatic stress or PTSD is a big issue with soldiers returning from a war zone.

Soldiers who go to war have been trained to be on the alert for danger, it’s even been described that ”War is a drug, it’s an addiction that you can’t beat or get rid of.”

The soldier is running on adrenaline and when he comes home it’s hard to switch it of.

 Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; A scientists view

Scientists wanted to find out the reason why people with Post traumatic stress disorder  can’t sleep and dream normally. One theory lies in rapid eye movement, or REM. It’s the time during sleep when a lot of dreaming occurs.

Levels of norepinephrine  a kind of adrenaline,  drop out completely. So it’s  a time when the chemistry of the brain actually changes. REM, otherwise known as rapid eye movement is the only time when this happens.

In healthy people, REM sleep is kind of like therapy. It’s an adrenaline-free environment where the brain can process its memories while sort of stripping off their sharp, emotional edges. “You come back the next day, and it doesn’t trigger that same visceral reaction that you had at the time of learning.”

One theory suggests that in people with Post traumatic stress disorder that the , REM sleep is broken. The adrenaline doesn’t go away like it’s supposed to. The brain can’t process tough memories, so it just cycles through them, again and again.

PTSD Nightmares and Dreams 

With PTSD nightmares and dreams cant seem to be controlled. Sometimes though the sufferer can have a nightmare and not even know it.

I’ve had one client Craig Burgess  tell me he didnt  know he was having nightmares but his parents recorded him one night and when he watched it the next day he was very shocked.

My Binge Eating Disorder Diaries

Binge eating disorder diary and log of my recovery from binge eating disorder by Miss  P a client of NLP trainer, hypnotherapist and binge eating disorders expert Debbie Williams from Birmingham, West Midlands.

As an individual recovering from binge eating disorder I know the distress and dysfunction relapses can cause. This month I found myself relapsing but not at the usual time of the month but sporadically!!!

The realisation that my hormones are not to blame was hard to accept at first; however my therapist has taught me to see this as feedback not failure. With the real question being: What do I need to learn to move on?

In short, rather than looking to blame something or someone for my binge eating disorder it is far more productive to learn from it and move on.

I know that I am in a much better place overall, than I was three months ago and changing firmly embedded bad habits, like binge eating for over fifteen years, could take up to six months or longer to correct.

Phantom limb pain can be reduced when you have a strategy in how to ‘process’ what your mind is doing. Giving it a new template, or metaphor to follow can help  to reduce the phantom limb pain dramatically.

Phantom limb pain is something that Birmingham hypnotherapist Debbie Williams has had personal experience with. Her first husband whom  she married at 18 after a 5 year courtship had to have his leg amputated after an accident at work.

The advice Debbie gave him when he had to sign consent forms going into the operating theatre to have his leg amputated was that at least the pain will go when the leg is removed. How wrong that was!

Even though the limb is removed ‘the phantom limb’ can still give very real pain to the sufferer.  And although the marriage ended Debbie has never forgotten the courage shown by her husband and how he dealt with his phantom limb pain.

The cold would make the phantom limb pain worse, yet despite this her husband learned to drive a ‘gear stick ‘ car rather than automatic. Debbie wished she could of helped him more but didn’t know how back then.

Debbie Williams lived in Selly Oak for some time after moving to Birmingham. It is the home of Selly Oak Hospital where many soldiers returning from active service, injured with loss of limbs and other injuries are treated.
